Program for Entering 3rd Graders. Third grade is an important transition year for children as they develop the skills they need to read more challenging books.
This program makes this process easy and positive for children and their parents. To meet the needs of entering third graders, this program has four goals. Students will: Learn long- word decoding skills. This program teaches skills and strategies for reading multisyllabic words, a big challenge facing students at this age as they read longer, more difficult books. Develop fluency. Students build fluency, the ability to read words smoothly, easily and accurately, without having to decode. Build comprehension. Guided discussions about characters, events, and story structure increase students' comprehension and enjoyment of the books they read.
Become strong, independent readers. Students do a lot of independent reading in books at the right level of difficulty and receive the skills instruction and comprehension support they need to experience success and build confidence. The program meets once a week for five weeks. Parents receive resources to help them support their child's reading development, including a comprehensive Program Guide and DVD, The Reading Development Booklist, and an individualized Book- Level Recommendation to guide them in selecting books at right level for their child's independent reading.
